USA, Canadian or Australian citizens: A visa is required to enter Brazil.
Citizens from most Western European countries do not require a visa (including U.K. and Russia). A list of all countries that require a visa to Brazil is HERE.
This is not something to be done at the last minute. The process takes about 10 business days and costs about USD ~$160.
To get a visa, fill out the Brazilian Government Online Visa Application Form and, with a copy of the letter, apply in person or by mail. Also provide a set of documents (passport, photo, money order and a cover letter with dates and purpose of your trip). Most get a visa that expires in 10 years, so it's worth doing anyway.
